WHAT DO I WEAR TO YOGA AND WHAT SHOULD I BRING WITH ME?
Comfortable workout clothing that you can move in. Shorts or workout pants and a tee shirt or tank are great. Some classes are warmed or heated so layers are always recommended. We have a bathroom for changing, but we recommend you come to class dressed to practice if you are able to change prior to arriving. If you have your own mat please bring it. We have a limited number of mats available to use at the studio on a first come basis. A small towel and water bottle are also recommended.
YOGA ETIQUETTE? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
Arrive to class at ten minutes early. Especially if you are a first-time student or need to purchase a class pass/pack. If you are running late and class has already started, please note that the teacher may have locked the door and closed the class to additional students if a certain amount of time has passed since the class started. If you arrive late and are able to take the class, you must sign-in at the desk on the posted sign-in sheet and see the teacher after class to pay for your class. If you fail to do this the teacher will not get paid for sharing their expertise with you. We ask that when entering a class that has already started, you do so as quietly and swiftly as possible as to not disrupt the rest of the students and teacher.
Please turn your cell phone off before entering the studio. We are an intimate and small studio and voices and conversations are readily heard by all. Creating a tranquil environment is important to your practice. So, please respect your teacher and fellow students when entering the studio and being mindful of your voice and conversations. Use your time to decompress by turning off and tuning in!
No perfume PLEASE… some students and teachers are very sensitive to smell and even a smell from someone across the room can affect your practice.
SHOULD I EAT BEFORE CLASS?
We recommend that you do not eat within two hours of practicing, but some students prefer a light snack within the hour before class such as a piece of fruit or juice.
WHERE SHOULD I START?
We always recommend starting at the beginning with a Yoga Basics Class or Beginners series. We have several options on our schedule, but if none of these classes fit your schedule then you should start with an ALL LEVELS class and always inform the teacher that this is your first time or that you are a newer student. Yoga is about honoring your body and the process of learning. It is important to not put yourself in a pose or perform a movement that you are not ready for. Your practice is YOUR practice, and trying to perform the asanas (poses) like or better than the person next to you is not what makes us better yogis. When we learn to let go of our expectations and show ourselves compassion, that is when yoga happens.
HOW LONG AND HOW OFTEN SHOULD I PRACTICE YOGA?
Yoga is truly a life-long practice. With every passing class, month or year, yoga offers us endless possibilities. The more you practice yoga the better. At Shoreline Yoga we offer you many options to balance your physical and spiritual practice so that every day you can find a type of yoga or meditation class that fits your needs that day.
